Note: Dates marked in REDindicate a group is scheduled for the George on that evening. Click on the above "George Calendar" link to see information about the group.
GRB practice nights are scheduled by Bill Dillon to allow observers to practice setting up the cameras and equipment for the purpose of observing gamma ray burst, variable stars or any other phenomena which requires a "quick response". These sessions are open for all club members and is a good way to start learning how to set up and use the CCD camera and telescope.

The Fort Bend Astronomy Club owns and operates an 18" fork mounted Newtonian telescope housed in a 16' dome at the George Observatory located in Brazos Bend State Park. In agreement with the Observatory we are obligated to provide telescope operators for public viewing on all Saturday nights and some Friday nights. In return club members are allowed access to the telescope on all other nights.
Included in the dome are star charts, eyepieces, a computer with charting programs, a Cookbook CCD camera, and a SBIG ST-7 CCD camera. The telescope and cameras are available to any club member provided the club member volunteers at least once per quarter or makes one of our "Astronomy on Wheels" programs.
First time volunteers will be paired with an experienced operator until such time that the volunteer feels comfortable using the telescope. Initial training can take place on your first night of volunteering.
It is important for all club members to make an effort and volunteer at least once on the telescope. On a typical Saturday night we are in contact with 200 or more people of all ages and astronomical experience. This gives our club a unique opportunity to entertain a vast number of people while also educating them about what we do.
DARK MOON SCHEDULING INFORMATION
The dark-moon period runs from a few days prior to third Q moon until a few days prior to first Q moon. This period does not include Saturdays. Saturdays will be scheduled as usual. During the bright moon period the scope can be used at any time, please check schedule to see available dates.
Until you are comfortable with the surroundings I would recommend observing with one of the existing groups instead of going solo. Safety is always first!
It is also recommended you call the Observatory for the gate code. It is usually posted on the board downstairs but it may not be current. The number there is 281-242-3055. If you cannot get hold of anyone then call me @ 281-468 8491 If you get stuck out there then look up the camp-host, they are set up in the camping area. They will be happy to give you the code.
If you reserve a date, and find you cannot make the date, then please make an effort to switch with another member or put out a note on the mail-list stating you will not be using the scope.
